We take pride in our excellent high school program because the curriculum and courses we accept and recommend have produced students who have achieved the rank of being accepted to a military academy, National Merit Scholar and numerous academic and scholastic scholarships during our existence.

We offer a choice of three diplomas for our high school students enrolled in the ninth through twelfth grades. These diplomas are as follows:

Academic:

Includes courses for students interested in pursuing the higher math and science courses. This diploma has the courses and credits required by most 4-year universities. (We recommend that you contact the universities you are interested in attending to receive their admission requirements).

General:

Includes the courses and credits needed for a 2-year university or junior college.

Vocational:

Includes the courses and credits needed to complete high school requirements, but does not cover courses needed for college entrance. A student should be able to enter into a community college. This is an excellent choice for any student with a learning challenge. Courses are based upon grade level ascertained through our required Diagnostic Placement Testing.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS CONCERNING OUR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM:

Is there an age limit required?

Will my child retain credits they have already earned from a previous school?

Is it possible for my child to "place out" of some of the required subjects during the Diagnostic Placement Testing and receive credit toward their diploma?

Does my child have to be enrolled for a minimum amount of years to obtain a diploma from Summit Christian Academy?

If my child has been home schooled all their life up until this time and they do not have a certified written transcript how will you know what courses and credits they will need?

What if it indicates that they did not "master" a certain course or grade level, but it is one they have already taken?

How does my child obtain the number of electives that are required for each diploma?

Do you provide letters of recommendation for good student qualification, work permits and other needed documentation?

What grading system does Summit Christian Academy use?

What steps do I need to take when my child is ready to take the college entrance exams?

Q. Is there an age limit required?

A. No, we have had students who are younger than the average ninth grader who place on high school grade levels and they will receive high school credit for those courses on this level. We also have older students (including a grandmother) who enroll in our school to earn their long-desired diploma. top

Q.  Will my child retain credits they have already earned from a previous school?

A.  Yes, we will determine the number of courses and credits left for them to graduate after they complete the required Diagnostic Placement Testing. A minimum of 22 credits is required for each of our diplomas. They must have enough credits for all the required "core" subjects listed for each diploma, so it is possible they will graduate with more than the 22 credits. top

Q.  Is it possible for my child to "place out" of some of the required subjects during the Diagnostic Placement Testing and receive credit toward their diploma?

A.  Yes, it is possible to earn ˝ to 1 full credit with 80% mastery of suggested grade levels when they are tested. This will appear on their transcript as "PT" for placement testing with the percentage amount of mastery as the grade average. It will be averaged in with their overall G.P.A. top

Q.  Does my child have to be enrolled for a minimum amount of years to obtain a diploma from Summit Christian Academy?

A.  No, they do not have to be enrolled for a minimum number of years. They will, however, need to have the required number of courses and credits to earn each of our diplomas. A student must enroll in a minimum of three (3) core courses in order to graduate with a diploma from Summit Christian Academy. top

Q.  If my child has been home schooled all their life up until this time and they do not have a certified written transcript how will you know what courses and credits they will need?

A.  Through our Diagnostic Placement testing that each enrolled student is required to take upon enrollment.top

Q.  What if it indicates that they did not "master" a certain course or grade level, but it is one they have already taken?

A.  The only way we can give them proper credit is for them to take the course again. The second option is for the student to review that course’s curriculum and take that grade level placement test again in that particular subject.

Note: Many parents who have home schooled their children for several years use a variety of different curriculums and because of this there may be "learning gaps" because all the course material may not have covered what is asked in the Diagnostic Placement test. We are also aware that what is offered in one publisher’s curriculum at a certain grade level may not be the same as another publisher. All these factors are taken into consideration and we will advise and work with you for a mutual solution in these circumstances.

Q.  How does my child obtain the number of electives that are required for each diploma?

A.  There are several electives offered by Alpha Omega publications that we distribute which are excellent courses. You may also choose electives from Bob Jones, Abeka or other academic resources. But, for those courses that are not offered by our accepted publishers, we do have certain guidelines and policies that are included in a "High School" packet that is available for our enrolled students.

Because we highly encourage a "well-rounded’ academic program, we give credit for a variety of community service, church, fine arts and mission projects. A student may also earn ˝ credit per semester for our "work-study" program if they are employed and working a minimum of 15 hours per week.

For our students who are involved in competitive sports or an activity that requires more than the required number of hours than the suggested credit, we will consider issuing more credit based upon the situation. We ask that the parent and student consult with our Director of Education who, upon reviewing the course description, will determine the amount of credit they can earn. top

Q.  Do you provide letters of recommendation for good student qualification, work permits and other needed documentation?

A.  Yes, if a student is in "good standing" with us, which means that a student must be actively pursuing the prescribed program of study and is current with grades and tuition payments. top

Q. What if I feel inadequate to teach the higher math and science courses or would like my child to have lab experience but cannot afford all the equipment?

A.  There are additional math courses we accept such as Saxon Math and Keyboard Video Math Series that you might want to consider. Other options include hiring a tutor or working with other home school parents who may be gifted in math and working out some type of "barter" system where they teach your child math and you offer some type of service or gift in return. The same suggestions apply for the higher science courses. If you live near a community college, you might want to enroll your child in a science course that has a lab and earn a credit with them as well as with us. (Some age restrictions may apply – so check this out first). top

Important:

Our only requirement should you choose any of the mentioned options for Math or Science or any subject is that you let us know what your desires are and we will let you know if it is within our guidelines. We also require that accurate grades are maintained and sent into us. The community college should provide you with a transcript that you would need to send to us for proper high school credit. top

Q.  What grading system does Summit Christian Academy use?

A.  We use the 4.0 grading scale system. An 80% or above is required as a passing grade for all courses. Our scale is as follows:

100-94 = A 93-86=B 85-77=C 76-70=D

Below 70 =Failing

**A "weighted" GPA is used for our "honors" courses and some college courses (contact the Director of Education concerning college courses).

**Honors courses offered by Alpha Omega are: Physics, Trigonometry and Calculus.  top

Q.  What steps do I need to take when my child is ready to take the college entrance exams?

A.  We are registered with the S.A.T. and A.C.T. testing centers as well as the N.C.A.A. If your child is in "good standing", please contact our office for testing material information as well as our school code number which is needed at the time of testing. The testing dates along with a toll-free number for the location nearest you is listed in the material we receive from the S.A.T. and A.C.T. College entrance boards.

Note: We are aware that there are many very intelligent and bright students who do not test as well under pressure circumstances. If they do not score as well as they would like the first time, they can always purchase a review book and take it again at a later date.
